Telematics

Explanation
Telematics is the merging of information technology and communications to send and receive data. Its a large technology but telematics has adapted to the automotive industry and is used in high end vehicles for driver assistance, safety and comfort.
The sending and receiving of data can either be between vehicle to vehicle or between vehicle and externally. External sources can be a satellite, sensors along the roadway, emergency services or the vehicle's authorized dealer.
The services provided through telematics assist other features and sometimes they provide a feature of their own. Some we use everyday and others we may never need to use but thankful its still there just in case.
One of the common features telematic services compliment is the satellite navigation where real time traffic information is sent to your vehicle as you use the sat-nav. It also sends information such as points of interests around your location or the best possible route to your destination.
Some vehicles are constantly monitoring parts susceptible to wear and tear and to elements that are changed periodically such as oil. When these parts are observed by the system to be in need of changing the vehicle contacts the authorized dealer automatically to alert them and set up an appointment. Apart from just setting up the appointment the dealer knows exactly what needs servicing so minimum time is wasted during servicing.
The location of your vehicle can easily be traced in the event of theft. Your vehicle's location is monitored as the vehicle sends a signal to the service dealer once any of the anti theft systems are breached. The vehicle can be continuously traced until the vehicle is recovered.
Internet access is a feature also available through telematics. While it may not be the full blown internet on your desktop you can still perform some tasks like managing your e-mail, recieve news and other updates by using the infotainment system to access them through a mobile/wireless internet network.
This is one we hope not to be in the situation to use. In cases of emergencies for instance ir your vehicle is involved in a serious accident or in a breakdown a signal can be sent to the service dealer so roadside assistance can be sent as soon as possible.
Telematics is known by the various names for the various services, names as Mercedes Benz mbrace, GM's OnStar, Lexus Enform, BMW Assist and BMW Online. You may not see the word telematics as a feature but it is integrated into your high end vehicle in various ways to make certain functions easier.
